Initial Osteopathic Consultation
The initial osteopathic consultation is vital to get an understanding of what may be causing your problem. It will involve a thorough case history assessment whereby many questions will be asked about your current complaint and your past and current medical health. Following this, a physical assessment will take place whereby areas of the body believed to be potentially contributing to your discomfort will be examined. This is done by looking at posture, movement and using orthopaedic and other clinical tests. Areas of assessment often include the spine, joints, muscles, fascia, and ligaments or abdominal and pelvic organs.
Once the possible cause of the problem is established, it will be explained to you, and additionally what treatment will involve. Treatment application will depend on the individual patient and their issue but may involve some of the following: joint mobilisation and manipulations, soft tissue and stretching techniques, visceral manipulation, relaxation and breathing and lifestyle, exercise and nutritional advice.
It is important to note that on some occasions osteopathy may not be suitable or additional tests may be required to ensure the best and safest treatment option is given to you, in which case you will be referred on appropriately.
