The initial consultation is vital to get a good understanding of what may be causing your ailment. It will involve a thorough case history assessment in which a lot of questions will be asked about your current complaint and your past and current medical health. Following this a physical assessment will take place whereby the areas of the body which I believe may be contributing to your discomfort will be examined. This is done by looking at posture, movement and using orthopaedic and other clinical tests. Areas of assessment often include the spine, joints, muscles, fascia, and ligaments or abdominal and pelvic organs.
Once it’s established what the cause of the problem might be, it will be explained to you in addition to what treatment will involve. Treatment application will depend on the individual patient and their issue but may involve some of the following: joint mobilisation and manipulations, soft tissue and stretching techniques, visceral manipulation, relaxation and breathing and lifestyle, exercise and nutritional advice.
It is important to note that on some occasions osteopathy may not be suitable or additional tests may be required to ensure the best and safest treatment option is given to you, in which case you will be referred on appropriately.
